Chapter 3: Quidditch and Diagon Alley.
On the next morning, Becky woke up happy; as she knew it was going to be a nice day. She ate her breakfast, and then got ready. She had told Sirius she would arrive at 11. She waited patiently time to go. At 10:45, she went up and put her quidditch equipment in her bag. She took her broomstick, and went down.
“Mum, I'm going! I'll be back around 7!
- Okay, be careful. And be nice to Mrs Potter. Be polite!
- Yes, Muuum!” She said ironically.
She took a bit of floo powder in her left hand, and climbed in the fire place. A second later, she opened her eyes in a big living room. James was waiting on the sofa.
“SIRIUS! REBECCA'S HERE! Hi!” He added nicely to Becky. Becky could here loud foot steps running down the stairs.
“Hey, Becky!”. Sirius smiled widely to her.
“Hi Sirius, Hi James. Hello Mrs Potter.”
James' mother had just entered the room.
“Hello Rebecca! Pleased to see you.”
Rebecca looked at her feet. A lot of ashes had gone out of the chimney.
“Oh! I'm really sorry for the mess...
- No problem dear.”
She took her wand out her cloak and flicked it. All the ashes disappeared at once.
“Sirius, James, take Becky upstairs. I'll call you for lunch.
- Okay, Mum! Come on.”
James went up the stairs, Sirius and Becky followed. When Becky entered James' room, she saw easily James' hobby. They were posters of quidditch everywhere.
“I can see you support the Tornados!
- Sirius told me you supported them as well!
- I do!! Sirius supports the wasps!
- I know! Such a betrayer!”
They laughed together. Sirius didn't. He looked at James and Becky and couldn't help being a bit jealous. Becky saw it because she smiled to Sirius, and sat next to him on the bed.
“Hey! We're joking! Ya know we are! Lily's not even interested in Quidditch!
- And?
- She's my best friend! It's a proof I just don't care about Quidditch teams!” She kissed Sirius on the cheek.
“No problem. Okay?”
Sirius smiled widely. James' eyebrows went up.
“What?” Sirius asked.
“Nothing...” James said, smiling.
Sirius looked at James and moved a bit away from Becky.
“So...we're gonna play Quidditch this afternoon hein?” Becky said.
“Yeah... Sirius told me you played Chaser and seeker.
- I usually play seeker, but I like playing chaser as well. But I'm telling you, I'm really not very good. So... may not be great, for both of you, to play with me...
- It's okay... we'll get to teach you!” Sirius said, smiling. “I'm sure you're just being modest and you're pretty... good.”
Becky laughed. “You'll see!”
They spent another half hour talking about quidditch, which Becky really enjoyed, because between Lily (who was absolutely not interested in quidditch) and her parents (with who she simply didn't want to talk) she didn't get to talk a lot about her favourite sport ever. They went down 30 minutes later, as Mrs Potter called them for lunch. After lunch, Becky chatted a bit with Mrs Potter, and James started to be really bored. After 10 minutes, he finally said.
“Hey Becky... can we go now?
- Oh, Euh yes of course. I just have to go and get my quidditch stuff. I enjoyed talkin' to you Mrs Potter”, she added, smiling. She went in James' bedroom, took her broom, and went back down, where Sirius and James waited with their own brooms...
“Girls...always waiting for them”. James said, smiling.
Becky smiled.
“It's okay, we can go.
-Hopefully!” Sirius added.
They left the house.
“Don't the muggles react, when they see we're wondering around with a broom?
- Pfff... it's okay. They do think it's weird but we don't care. Coz', we are weird when you think about it.” James answered to Becky.
James, Sirius and Becky continued talking about quidditch and muggles until they reached the area where they played quidditch. James didn't wait. He immediately threw his sweater on a stone wall, mounted his broom, and started to fly. Sirius didn't follow. He looked at Becky for quite a long time. She was looking at how James was flying. When she looked at him, he smiled, and said:
“Aren't you going?
- Oh. Euh... yeah, sure.”
She took her jumper of, and mounted her broom. She flew directly to James.
“So. Are we playing?
- Sure! Show me what you can do. HEY SIRI! COME UP HERE!”
Sirius joined them.
“So? How are we playing? First to 100 wins, and no teams. Okay? Becky, you get to go first.
- Hey, I don't want your pity!” She smiled. “But okay, I'll go.”
James threw the Quaffle. She caught it, and immediately went to the only ring there was on the pitch. By the time James and Sirius reacted, she had already scored.
Sirius got near James, and whispered.
“Didn't she say she sucked at Quidditch? Because that was pretty quick!
- Probably just luck....
It wasn't just luck. James won the game, of course, but when he reached 100 points, Becky already had 80, and Sirius was left behind with 60. Becky was smiling.
“Thank you so much for this game, boys. It's so good to finally play with good players.
- Yeah, and you are really good!” James added.
“Yeah, sure” Becky said sarcastically. Sirius looked at her.
“Seriously!”
She blushed, but didn't say anything.
Becky, James and Sirius went back to James' house around 6:30, after two more games (James won the 2 of them, and Sirius finished last each time). Before leaving, Becky asked the boys when they were going to Diagon Alley.
“We don't really know”. Sirius answered. “When are you going?
- I'm meeting Lily, Mary and Chinoa on the 28th.
- Oh, okay. What time and where?
- Leaky Cauldron, 11 am.
- Works for me. James?
- No problem. Is it gonna be okay with your little friends if we meet you there? I don't want to cause a scandal, but we were planning to go on the 28th or 29th anyway. The more we are the better it is, right?
- Sure! No problem. It's maybe gonna be a bit boring for you two, hearing us telling the others all we did during the holidays, but it would be great to see you there.
- We'll come” Sirius said.
“Okay, well I've gotta go now, but I'll meet you there!”
She smiled to Sirius, looked at James, took some Floo-powder, and left. Sirius stared at the fireplace, smiling, for another 20 seconds. James looked at Sirius.
“Good day, hein?” He asked him.
- Very good...” Sirius answered, still dreaming. He realized after what he had just said, stopped dreaming, and said more seriously:
“I mean... playing quidditch is always good!
- Pretty, hein?
- Yeah... what? Oh, I do not know what you are talking about.”
James laughed.
The next days were devoid of any thing exciting. Becky continued going to the ministry, to please her mum; Lily did more and more homework; and the boys played more quidditch.
Becky woke up very early on the 28th, even if she only had to leave at 10:20 (she had to use the underground, as there was a problem with the floo network in Diagon Alley). She got ready as soon as she woke up. When she came back in her bedroom, an owl she had never seen was waiting on her bed. She frowned, and took the letter. The writing was big, and dirty. She immediately had an idea, of who is could be.
Hey Beck!
This confirmed her ideas.
How R U? Good week? I know I'm gonna see you later on, so I won't be long. James' mother can't bring us to Diagon Alley today, so we've got to go with the underground (that's how it's called, right?). But we don't know where to go, and how to use the underground. So is it okay if we floo to your house, and then we go together? Or, were you planning to apparate? I'll turn 17 on the 30th, so I can't apparate yet. So, can we come at 10 and then go together? James doesn't know how he'll go yet.
Answer quickly! See ya! Sirius.
Ps: You know there's a problem with the floo network in Diagon Alley, don't you? I head it was an accident or something...
Becky knew already. She took a bit of parchment, and wrote back.
No problem. I'm aloud to apparate but my mum doesn't really want me to. “Just for emergencies” she says. Do you have muggle money? If not I'll give you enough to pay the underground, it's not expensive. See you at 10! XoXo ; ) BeckY
She smiled and sent the owl with the letter. It was 8:45.
“Plenty of time!” She thought. She went to see her mum in the kitchen.
“Mum! You have to give me enough money for my books. I've got the list in my bag. My robes still fit, we bought them last year.
- Here are enough for your books, the underground, and a bit more if you wanna buy a few things.”
She handled her a purse, looking quite full;
“Great! Thanks mum!”
She kissed her mum on the cheek, went back in her bedroom, and put muggle and wizard money in her bag.
“Hey Ditto! You don't need anything, do you?” The owl looked at her, and moved a bit.
“Do you wanna go out a bit? I forgot to let you out last night...”
As a response, the owl flew to the window, and landed on the window edge. Becky smiled, and opened the window.
“I'll be in Diagon Alley today. See ya later!”
Ditto flew away. Becky lay down on her bed, she was quite tired, now she thought about it... she closed slowly her eyes... She was woken up because she felt as her bed was strangely moving... It felt like someone had just violently sat on it. She opened the eyes...
“What the...”
Sirius and James were sitting at the end of her bed. She sat, and ran her hand through her hair, to brush them a bit. Sirius and James grinned.
“Hey, sleepy!” Sirius said.
“I'm sorry... I woke up early this morning...
- No problem, don't apology. We talked a bit with your mum, it's 10:15. Should we go?”
After Becky had finish brushing her hair, and put a bit of make up on, they could finally go.
“So, how was your week?” James asked, on the way to Turnham Green, the tube station.
- Boring, boring, and boring... Ministry.” She added.
“Oh. Not cool...
- You?
“We had fun...” Sirius answered. “Hein James? Quidditch, quidditch, and quidditch.” Sirius said, smiling.
“Let me guess, James won?”
James laughed but Sirius didn't.
“Hey! I am not a Chaser!”
James had a weird cough, sounding pretty much like “fortunately!” Sirius didn't say anything.
Becky smiled at him, and said as they got in the tube:
“Relax! You're an excellent beater! You can't be good at everything!”
He didn't smile, nor say anything.
“I'm sorry Siri.” She kissed him on the cheek, he grinned. James laughed.
“He would do anything for a kiss”. James said.
Becky didn't smile, she looked at Sirius.
“But, not from anyone!” Sirius added quickly. “Only nice and pretty girls.” He said softly.
Becky grinned, the tube stopped, and James got down first. Sirius was starting to get down, but Becky pulled his tee-shirt, he looked at her, she tiptoed, and kissed him on the cheek again.
“Anytime.” She said. The two of them were grinning when they got out of the tube.
They arrived in front of the leaky cauldron Five minutes later. Becky saw Lily, speaking with Chinoa and Mary. She ran and threw herself in Lily's arms.
“Hey Lil'!
- Hello, Mon petit camarade!”
Lily noticed James and Sirius. Becky was saying Hi to Chinoa and Mary. Lily took Rebecca aside.
“What is he doing here?
-I invited him.” Becky said calmly. “Calm down. We played quidditch together and it was cool, so I asked if he wanted to come with us. Stay cool. No problem. She looked at Sirius, he mouthed:
“Is everything okay?”
She smiled. Everything was okay. She embraced Lily, and went to Sirius.
“Everything's fine. No problem”. She smiled.
They were now two groups: Lily talking with Chinoa and Mary, and Sirius and James. Becky looked at Sirius.
“Come.”
They went to Chinoa, Mary and Lily.
“Girls, you know Sirius Black and James Potter I suppose. Boys, this is Mary, and Chinoa, and, you know Lily.” Lily and James' eyes met for a second, but Lily diverted the glance.
“Should we go?” Everyone nodded. Becky entered first in the leaky cauldron. They went to the back yard, and Becky tapped the wall with her wand. The wall opened.
“Nice to be here”. Becky said. So, where d'ya wanna go?” Everybody looked at each other.
“We should go to Flourish & Blotts' first, so that's done.” Lily said. James looked at her.
“But then we'd have to carry our books all day long. I reckon we should go last.
-Yeah, sorry Lil' but James is right. I don't wanna carry my books all day long. So?
- Quality Quidditch Supplies?” James asked.
“Yeah!” Becky and Sirius said at once. Lily, Chinoa and Mary were hesitating.
“I'd rather go to the magical instruments shop...” Lily said.
“Yeah, me too.
- Same” Mary and Chinoa added.
“It's okay, it's right next to each-other.”
Becky looked mitigated.
“What?” Sirius asked nicely.
“Well, I haven't seen Lily for nearly two month...and...
-Don't say more. It's okay. Go with her then.
- Becky? You know you can go to quidditch supplies if you want to, we'll have plenty of time to discuss later, don't matter about me.
-Okay Lil'.” She embraced her again. “I'm so glad to see ya!
-I am too. Go with them. I'll meet you her in an hour, okay? Then maybe we could go to muggle London to eat something...
-Great idea. See ya in an hour.” She smiled.
They all met an hour later, after they had all bought a few stuff. They went in a muggle fast-food (“fast-food??” Sirius asked), they ate, and went out.
“Lily?” Becky asked “D'ya wanna go now?”.
-Sure.
- Cool. Okay everyone. We have something to do in muggle London; we'll meet you in Diagon Alley in an hour, in front of Gringotts.
Nobody had time to answer, they were already gone. They all went to have a drink in the leaky cauldron, and then went back and waited for the girls near Gringotts. They finally arrived, smiling, 5 minutes late.
“So?” Mary asked.
“So what?” Becky answered.
“What did you do?
-This... is going to remain our secret.”
Mary looked at Chinoa, Sirius and James.
“Okay... where are we going now?
- Buy our books? It's already 4:00...” Lily proposed.
- Oh, ok, when d'ya have to be home?” Chinoa answered.
“Half past six” Lily, Becky, James and Sirius said at once.
-Oh... half past five for us... coz we have to baby-sit my sister after...
-It's okay. Let's buy our books now so it's done.”
They went to Flourish & Blotts, and bought 6 exemplars of the books, one for each. It took quite a long time for the bookseller to get all the books, by the time they got out, they only had time to wonder a bit in Diagon Alley before it was time for Mary and Chinoa to go.
“We'll see ya all on the Hogwarts Express, right? First one guards the compartment!
-As usual, Noa. Bye girls!”
After everyone had said bye, the girls left. Lily looked at Becky.
“So what do we do now?
- I don't know... what do you wanna do boys?
- No idea...
- Why don't we all go back at my house, wonder a bit just to be together, and then you floo whenever you wanna?
- Yeah! Why not?! James? Lily? Okay with that?
-Okay for me.
- Yeah no problem.
-Cool. Let's go. D'ya all have enough muggle money left?
-Yeah.
- Affirmative.
- Okay, let's go.”
They all left Diagon Alley, went back to the tube station, arrived in Turnham Green, and then finally at Becky's.
“Hey! Mum, I'm back! I'm with Lily, James and Sirius, we're going in my bedroom!”
They all went up.
“Sorry it's not very big, sit down if you wanna.”
Lily sat on the bed, James on a chair, and Becky and Sirius sat on the floor. Lilt and James hadn't exchange one sentence in the all day.
“So? Are you excited to go back?” Becky asked the others.
“I am” Sirius answered first “even if this summer's the best I ever had, thanks to the week at the Potters. Playing quidditch was also cool... meeting you as well...” They both smiled. They were doing it again: looking at each other, like everything else was dissolving around. After 10 seconds, James coughed.
“I'm very excited to go back as well, thanks for asking.” They laughed. “I wanna see everyone, and do pranks, and play quidditch, and go to the three broomsticks. That's life.
- You know we have our NEWTs this year don't you?!” Lily finally said. She was actually talking to him. Sirius and Becky exchanged looks.
-And? It won't stop me from having fun. I don't need to work a lot to have good marks. Natural intelligence.” He grinned. Lily looked up, but didn't say anything. Becky and Sirius exchanged nervous looks again, but didn't say anything either. To relax the atmosphere, Becky put one of her favorite CDs. The first track was called Love me do.
Love, love me do
You know I love you
That'll always be true
So pleaaaaase
Love me do
“Muggle music?” Sirius asked.
Lily looked scandalized.
“You DON'T know THE BEATLES?”
Sirius looked at her.
“I don't know any muggle music. My mum burnt the muggle books I had, and even muggle objects. She hates muggles. That's why she keeps me locked in all summer, to be sure I don't go wondering around.
-Oh. Sorry I didn't know. They are 4 boys from Liverpool: Paul Mc Cartney is my favorite, and then John Lennon Is Becky's favorite, and then you have Ringo Star and George Harrison.” As she was speaking, she was showing him who they were on one of the numerous posters. “Their music is really great. We love it”.
“Oh. Okay. Sounds cool to me.” He noticed the three guitars against the wall. “Do you play Guitar Becky?”
“I do, yes.
-You have 3?!
-No, the one on the right is actually a bass, I play bass as well.
-Cool...” He looked really impressed. “For how long have you played?
- Since I was...umm...9 I think. I really like it.
- Could you show me?
- Naaa... I'm not very good.”
Lily laughed and mouthed to Sirius “she's great”.
Sirius looked at her. “Yeah, like quidditch. You seem to think you're bad at many things, when you're actually quite good at it.
-Okay, okay... I'll play.”
She grabbed one of her guitars, and turned the music off.
“This is “Day tripper. The Beatles of course.” She added. “And I know a very good singer who's gonna sing while I play.” She said, looking very hardly at Lily.
“No way!” Lily said.
“Come on. I agreed to play.
-You're a good singer too, and you know the words. Sing with me.
- Oh all right, I'll sing the chorus with you.”
Becky played the first notes, it sounded really good, after a moment, Lily started to sing.
“Got a good reason for taking the easy way out
Got a good reason for taking the easy way out now”
Becky joined in each time Lily sang the chorus.
She was a day tripper, one way ticket yeah
It took me so long to find out, I found out
She's a big teaser, she took me half the way there
She's a big teaser, she took me half the way there now
She was a day tripper, one way ticket yeah
It took me so long to find out, I found out
Tried to please her, she only played one night stands
Tried to please her, she only played one night stands now
She was a day tripper, Sunday driver yeah
It took me so long to find out, I found out
Day tripper
Day tripper yeah
Day tripper
Day tripper yeah...”
Lily smiled while Becky was playing the last notes.
“I did one or two mistakes”. She finally said.
“Girls, it was great!” Sirius said with admiration.
“It was pretty cool yeah.” James said, smiling.
“Do any of you play the guitar?” The boys said “no” together.
“Shame. Wanna try?
“No I think I will avoid that.
- For once, I agree with my dear Sirius.”
Becky and Lily laughed. They continued talking about the Beatles (a lot), and then Becky accompanied them down.
“It was nice to see you all! Nice after-noon”. Becky said smiling.
“It was. Thanks a lot Beck”.
“You're welcome Siri and stop calling me Beck, will you?
-No” He answered grinning. She gave him a false dirty look.
“Why don't you guys go first, I'd like a quick chat with Lil'.
-Okay.”
James smiled, said bye, and left.
“So, I suppose I'll go.
- I suppose you should, yes” Becky smiled.
Sirius stepped forward, and kissed her on the cheek.
“I'll see you two on the first! Bye!
- Bye Siri!
- Bye Sirius.”
He smiled, and left.
“You wanted to talk to me?” Lily asked.
“I just wanted to know if you weren't too mad at me for inviting James today.
- No, of course I'm not mad at you. It's just... rhh I just hate him, that's all.
- I think he's quite nice. He changed you know, he's less arrogant than before.
- I don't think so. You like Sirius hein? Or should I call him Siri?
- Oh, bugger of!” Becky said half laughing.
- Once you'll admit you like James, I'll admit I like Sirius.
- But I hate James!
- Sure you do. That's why you couldn't stop looking at him today.” Becky grinned.
- Rebecca Amelia Jane Watson, you are in so much trouble!”
She started to tickle her, Becky laughed.
“Don't – giggle – try – giggle – to avoid – giggle – this conversation!
- You are so wrong, my dear. I'm leaving now” She said smiling.
“Bye Beck!
- NOT YOU!”
She didn't have time to continue, Lily was already gone. Becky went in her room and lay down on her bed. She couldn't stop thinking about what Lily had said: “You like Sirius hein? Or should I call him Siri?”. Becky smiled. “Naa, of course I don't “Like” him.” She said as trying to convince herself.
